Exploring South Hams Food Scene

Exploring South Hams Food Scene

Whether you’re staying in Salcombe, Dartmouth, or exploring the wider South Hams, this beautiful pocket of Devon is fast becoming a foodie destination in its own right. From beachside huts serving up fresh seafood to quirky taprooms and elevated pub classics, here’s my round-up of some of the best places I ate while on holiday there in September.

Crafty Mussel – Dartmouth

A newcomer to the Dartmouth dining scene, Crafty Mussel does exactly what it says on the tin – mussels, and lots of them. We shared two varieties: the Find and Foster Cream (a house favourite), and the Curry and Coconut. While both were excellent, the latter was the standout for me — rich, fragrant, and perfectly balanced. If you’re a mussel fan, this is a must-visit.

Rockfish – Salcombe

Having long been a fan of Rockfish in Dartmouth, I was thrilled to hear they’d opened a new restaurant in Salcombe. Founded by Mitch Tonks, Rockfish’s motto is ‘Tomorrows fish are still in the sea’. The menu changes daily based on the local catch, which adds an element of excitement as the menu changes every time you go. This time, I opted for the monkfish – tender, meaty, and beautifully cooked. I nearly went for the lobster and had a bit of food envy when I saw it arrive at the next table. There’s always next time!

The Bear and Blacksmith – Chillington

This charming village pub recently reopened under new management – a young couple, the head chef and front of house manager. We went for a traditional Sunday roast and sampled all three meat options: leg of lamb, beef rump, and pork belly. Each was served with cauliflower cheese, seasonal veg, and a giant Yorkshire pudding. For £1.50, you can upgrade your Yorkie to be filled with beef brisket. Naturally, I did and absolutely did not regret that decision, other than not being able to finish it all.

Salcombe Brewery Taproom – Island Street, Salcombe

One of the newer additions to Island Street, Salcombe Brewery’s Taproom is a relaxed space where you can try their full range of beers and ales straight from the source. The taproom connects to Rockfish (through the toilets, no less!), making it a convenient pre-dinner stop. They serve the classic snacks that pair well with a pint including homemade sausage rolls and pork pies, and when you sign up to their mailing list, you get a free pint – what’s not to love?

Britannia @ the Beach – Beesands

Hidden in plain sight on Beesands beach, this little hut might look like your average fish and chip takeaway but inside lies a tiny restaurant with just six tables and a whole lot of charm. Their seafood platter for two is next-level: scallops, crevettes, fresh crab, calamari, scampi, battered fish goujons, coleslaw, bread, and salad. It’s no exaggeration to say this is one of my favourite meals of all time and every time I explain it to people I take the reality exceeds their expectations.

The Winking Prawn – North Sands

If you’re a fan of Po’ Boys, The Winking Prawn is the place to go. I wish I could give some insight into other dishes but I have visited at least five times and ordered the same thing every single visit. It’s that good! Fun fact this was also used as a filming location named ‘We’ve Got Crabs’ for The Roses, the film starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman that released in August.

The Harbour Hotel – South Sands

Part of the Harbour Hotels collection, the South Sands location offers a fantastic spa day deal that includes a £25 food voucher. The Beach Club Bar & Restaurant serves hearty options — from crispy fish and chips to juicy burgers. With the voucher, you’ll still have enough left for a starter or dessert. Great food and a spa day? Yes please.

Salcombe Original Takeaway

This family-run takeaway in the heart of Salcombe is perfect for feeding a crowd with different tastes. One side of the shop serves classic fish and chips, while the other specialises in pizzas. With something for everyone, it’s a great, easy option after a day out on the water or a coastal walk.

South Hams continues to impress with its evolving food scene — mixing traditional charm with exciting new ventures. Whether you’re craving seafood straight from the fishing boat, a comforting roast, or a pint of something local, there’s something for everyone.
