A Long Weekend in Marrakesh: Flavours, Friendship, and a Few Surprises

Just over a year ago, I decided – very last minute – to venture off with a gal pal to the gorgeous city of Marrakesh for a long weekend. I’d always been curious about Morocco, and when the opportunity presented itself, I couldn’t say no. Flights booked, bags packed (more like overpacked), and off we went!

As a self-proclaimed picky eater, I knew this trip would push me out of my comfort zone – and that was exactly the point. I made a promise to myself to say yes to the experience, especially when it came to food. After all, what better way to immerse yourself in a new culture than by tasting your way through it?

Marrakesh as a city is a whirlwind – in the best way. It’s an intoxicating mix of vibrant colours, bustling souks, and the scent of spices wafting through the air. It felt like every corner held a new surprise: a hidden courtyard café, a mosaic-covered riad, a street vendor calling out with fresh mint tea. And then, of course, there was the food.

One of our favourite meals was at Nomad, a chic rooftop restaurant that somehow blends modern design with the soul of the medina. I can still taste the melt-in-your-mouth beef with fluffy couscous, perfectly spiced and cooked to perfection. The dish was so simple, yet so full of flavour that it completely won me over. And of course, we sipped plenty of fresh mint tea – hot, sweet, and fragrant. It became a ritual of the trip: mint tea in the morning, after meals, and during every little break in between.

Beyond the food, one of the most magical experiences we had was an journey into the desert at sunset. Bouncing along on camels, we made our way to a small traditional camp where dinner was waiting under the stars. Sitting on rugs, surrounded by lanterns and silence, we shared a traditional Moroccan meal prepared with love – slow-cooked meats and fresh warm bread. It was surreal, humbling, and something I’ll never forget.

This trip was a reminder that some of the best experiences come from taking a leap – trying something new, stepping out of your routine, and saying yes even when you’re not sure what the outcome will be. I went for the food and the adventure, but I left with a deeper appreciation for a culture that welcomed me with open arms (and full plates)!

I wanted to share some of the glowing memories from that trip, not just as a travel diary, but as a little encouragement to take that spontaneous trip, try that unfamiliar dish, and go somewhere that challenges your senses in the best possible way.

Because sometimes, the most unexpected journeys become the ones that stay with us forever.
