Brunch at El Quim de la Boqueria

The pulse of a city. Produce at its peak. The sheer immediacy of market cooking.

BY JOLITA HALLAS

During our family holiday in Barcelona, we wanted to experience Spanish food that felt authentic and local. One of our favourite discoveries was El Quim de la Boqueria, a small counter restaurant in the heart of the famous La Boqueria Market.

We arrived for a late brunch and shared a selection of tapas and seafood dishes. Sitting at the counter and watching the chefs cook right in front of us made the experience feel special from the start. The aroma of garlic, olive oil and freshly grilled seafood filled the air, while the bustling market created a vibrant backdrop.

Every dish was beautifully prepared and packed with flavour. The seafood was incredibly fresh, the vegetables vibrant, and the ingredients were allowed to speak for themselves.

From tender squid and succulent prawns to classic Spanish tapas, every bite tasted authentic and carefully crafted. It was clear the food was prepared with passion and respect for quality produce.

What impressed us most was that, despite being located in one of Barcelona’s busiest tourist attractions, El Quim completely exceeded expectations. Rather than relying on its location, it delivers exceptional food using market-fresh ingredients and traditional flavours. As Chef Quim explains, his culinary creations are “always cooked with fresh market products”, and that commitment to freshness was evident in every plate we tasted.

More than just a meal, it was an experience. Sharing plates as a family, discovering new flavours and soaking up the atmosphere of the market made it one of the highlights of our trip. The sounds of traders, the theatre of the open kitchen and the energy of La Boqueria combined to create a dining experience that felt uniquely Barcelona.

El Quim has been part of La Boqueria since 1987, building a reputation for serving authentic market cuisine using the finest ingredients available.

Sometimes the most memorable meals are not found in elegant restaurants, but at a busy market counter where great food, fresh ingredients and genuine hospitality come together.

El Quim de la Boqueria was one of the best food experiences of our holiday and a place I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone visiting Barcelona.

“Always cooked with fresh market products.” Those simple words from Chef Quim perfectly capture what makes this place so special.
